Victoria Beckham Returns to Her Roots With Her New Body Conscious Line

Victoria Beckham (both the brand and the woman) is best known for a specific set of impeccably tailored silhouettes: smart straight-leg trousers, blouses in zingy colors, and dresses with full skirts and nipped-in waists. Because of that, the launch of VB Body, a new line of jersey separates and dresses, might seem like a diversion. In fact, it’s a return to form.

“It really took me back to my roots,” Beckham says. “I don’t mean my Spice Girl roots—I mean when I first started to create ready-to-wear. It was about creating dresses that were flattering, paying a lot of attention to seaming details in this case because this is a tight knit jersey. All of the garments really cinch you in at the waist, they hug your curves, and they really do celebrate a woman’s body.” It’s true. When Beckham launched her line at New York Fashion Week in spring 2009, Nicole Phelps wrote for Vogue, “The silhouette is beyond body-conscious, ultra-fitted from shoulder line to below the knee, with special seams along the derrière and torso to ensure against flat rear ends and busts, respectively.”

Now, over a decade later, Beckham has been inspired to wholly embrace clingy silhouettes after spending time in Miami during lockdown. “People really celebrate their bodies,” she says of the beach city. “It’s definitely a ‘less is more’ approach to dressing, which is very different to what we know in London or New York or Paris. It’s not about burying ourselves under too many items of clothing.” The collection is made entirely with heavy jersey fabric, in a range of neutral colors from blush to black, plus traffic cone orange for the color-block effect Beckham is so fond of. The jersey fabric, “holds you in,” so you could wear a bandeau as an underpinning and forgo shapewear. In addition to mini dresses, bandeau tops, and one-shoulder midi dresses are split-hem leggings and skirt sets—going-out clothes for sophisticates. “By the time I was in Miami and I was going out, I wanted to get my body out,” Beckham explains.
