The fringe has been in for longer than we can remember. In fact, the hairstyle trend that possesses immense staying power originally came from the Ancient Egyptians, who used blunt styles across their forehead for natural hair and wigs. While bangs have been through many iterations trend-wise – from sleek bangs to Birkin bangs – the trend has been resurrected once again with a bit of a twist. Who would have thought to merge two contrasting hairstyles: textured hair with the fringe?
Yes, natural texture fringes are offering a contemporary alternative to the traditional fringe. “A fringe totally suits natural hair textures and it’s a major trend right now! The key is to keep them long enough to allow room for shrinkage and have them cut according to your face shape and hair length,” explains award-winning hairstylist Charlotte Mensah.
It’s even become popular with celebrities; Tracee Ellis Ross and Gabrielle Union recently debuted the soft and feminine look and we can’t get enough of it. It’s also making the rounds with influencers on the ‘gram and TikTok showing off the flattering natural texture fringe style. Curly-haired girls are loving it and so are we.
“This shape is forever timeless on all textures. The key is to find a great stylist that can alter it to frame your face. You can go for a heightened look at the top or keep the bangs short with the rest long if you prefer not to have volume,” says the founder of The Curl Bar London, Nia Pettitt.
She adds “Be mindful of your curl pattern when cutting the bangs as they may shrink up! Always start with longer pieces and build from there.”
The hair trend has caused a stir due to its versatility as more women of colour are embracing their natural texture whether it is kinky, coily or wavy. A statement hairstyle which is perfect for day or night, we love how it can frame your face and add dimension. Who needs contour? It’s giving serious hair envy and works well for all curly hair types from 3A to 4C curls.
“Curly bangs are so in right now and thank goodness, they bring such a lovely dimension to a wavy/curly shape and bring out your features if done right. Bangs and soft layers upgrade the look and though are to be maintained are definitely worth it,” according to Andree Marie, a hairstylist at Maison Style Boutique Hair Salon.
