  • Gwyneth Paltrow shared the “moisturizing” sunscreen she uses everyday.
  • She loves UnSun’s Mineral Tinted SPF 30 because it “sinks in like a dream.”
  • To properly protect from UV damage, the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends applying “approximately two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin” which equates to a “nickel-sized dollop” for the face alone.

We should all wear sunscreen year-round, but summer is upon us, which means more sweating and thus, a more frequent need for reapplication. And reapplying SPF requires a special kind of formula: one that you can rub in easily and doesn’t leave a white cast behind. Thankfully, Gwyneth Paltrow recently shared the sunscreen she’s using daily that checks both of those boxes.

In sharing her morning skincare routine on Goop’s website, Paltrow raved about UnSun’s Mineral Tinted SPF 30. She said it’s “moisturizing” and “sinks in like a dream,” adding that it comes from a Black-owned brand whose creator ensured it blends seamlessly into any skin tone.

The formula’s natural tint is great, but what’s even better is that it’s available in two shades, Light/Medium and Medium/Dark, making it super customizable to all and ideal for layering. Plus, it’s 100% mineral-based, which is dermatologist-preferred because mineral sunscreens physically block UV rays as opposed to reflecting them, like chemical sunscreens do. Mineral sunscreens also tend to cause less irritation for those with sensitive skin.

Reviewers love both shades of the UnSun SPF, and some even say it doubles as a tinted moisturizer. “You do not have to apply makeup when you use this product. Protection and a glow all in one is unheard of!” one Amazon shopper writes. “It’s so moisturizing, yet lightweight, easily blendable, doesn’t re-apply cakey, and it’s reef safe/clean/cruelty-free! Let’s just say I’m obsessed,” another adds. “It works great alone, or as a base for foundation. Marvelous product,” someone else raves.

While it’s totally fair game to take product suggestions from a seasoned beauty mogul like Paltrow, we can’t recommend you follow her SPF application technique (though we hope it has improved in recent months). If you missed it, the actress horrified dermatologists and fans alike last year when, in a beauty routine video for Vogue, she dotted sunscreen only on her nose and cheekbones, which is not enough to protect the skin from UV damage. (She later released a statement claiming her full application had been cut for editing purposes.)

So, as a reminder, the Skin Cancer Foundation’s guidelines for applying sunscreen are to use “approximately two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin.” That’s equivalent to an entire shot glass full of product to cover the entire exposed area, and a solid “nickel-sized dollop” or two finger lengths for the face alone. After that, reapply every two hours—or every 40 to 90 minutes if you’re swimming or sweating a lot.

“Reapplying sunscreen is like putting out a fresh cup to absorb the sun’s rays, rather than letting it get into your skin,” Heather Woolery-Lloyd, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and director of Ethnic Skin Care at the University of Miami Department of Dermatology previously told Prevention. Whether you’re using Paltrow’s beloved UnSun, a different tinted sunscreen, or even a powder SPF, just make sure you’re diligent so you can enjoy the sweaty season safely.
